Thank you for all your responses! I'm approx 180 km north of Melbourne. I'm an active JW with lots of questions and doubts about the so-called 'truth', the self-identified 'faithful and discreet slave' and the 'organisation' that declares itself God-directed. I love God but increasingly I'm wondering if I'm in 'Babylon the Great' and if I need to 'get out of her' ... ID

Ever wonder how seemingly smart people can be duped?
by fern indoes anyone ever wonder how their seemingly intelligent family members can be so totally taken in by this religion?
i look at my parents and just wonder how in the world do you fall for this jw crap?
neither of my parents are college educated but by no means are they stupid and have good judgement and sense when it comes to a lot of things, but not this religion.

Hi Fern, Isn't it interesting how we (mis)read posts? I assumed your parents were 'new in the truth' and that you were resisting it ... And here you are, brought up as a JW and your parents long-term JWs ... I feel a bit silly now, telling you 'how to suck eggs' (do you use this expression in the USA?). I'm a JW from an atheist family, with an Anglican-Buddhist husband and two boys who attend some meetings with me. I'm not forcing the so-called truth on them - because I myself struggle with it all ... I often feel like a 'fake' JW - like I'm not a 'real' JW. I look at the long term JWs in my congregation and I'm often tempted to think that it's easier for those who were 'brought up in the truth'. I do realise that's simplistic. I assume (hope) I'm an intelligent person and yet I struggle, I can't quite work it out ... I know many others who struggle. And then there are those who genuinely like it, like your parents. What a wide spectrum of complex experiences! And yet, I do feel very strongly that it's not about intelligence or the lack of it. It's much more complicated. I hope you're doing OK ... ID

Fern, there's probably no need to be ashamed of your parents. They're likely to be doing a lot of thinking - using their critical thinking skills. It's just that the 'evidence' that is being presented to them is very convincing and probably answers a lot of questions they need answered ... It's a very convincing package. And not having a college degree and/or going through a difficult patch do not automatically make them more vulnerable. Happy people with university degrees can and do become witnesses. I don't have the answer to what happens - God only knows - but I suspect it has something to do with our need to work out some big issues about our very existence ... Don't be ashamed of them. And you can't stop them either ... What about you? How come you're not studying with them? I'm just assuming you're not ... ID

Asking this question is no different from JWs asking how seemingly intelligent people can remain part of 'Babylon the Great'. Well, actually, JWs just presume that everyone in 'Babylon the Great' is just plain stupid. You're at risk of assuming that JWs are stupid. It's not about stupidity v intelligence. If it was, what would happen to one's stupidy or intelligence as one shifted from one belief system to another? Would you always gain one and lose the other? No belief system has a monopoly on intelligence. It's not about intelligence or the lack of it.

Why i liked being a Jehovah's Witness...
by digderidoo inthere are so many reasons why i liked being a jehovahs's witness.
1. we got to count time when we share our faith with nonbelievers or our young children.
2. we didn't have to go to college to get a good job as a janitor or a window washer.

Yeah, but would you really DARE to do it? My husband, who is not a Witness but comes along to the memorials, jokingly threatens to do it, every time. He never has. I have issues with it all and I too fantasize about doing it, but don't dare to. Would you dare? ID

(1) "you look like a spiritual person" A Ministerial Servant (now an Elder)and husband of the JW who studied the bible with me,commenting on my appearance during one of my first Field Service outings. (2) "well, that could not be called spiritual" An elderly female member of our congregation, after leaving a sister's husband's funeral. The husband was not a witness. In other words, spiritual=looking+sounding like a JW. Infuriating.
